Tips for Online Learning
Taking courses online can provide exciting
opportunities for people who are constrained
by time, geographical locations or other factors.
There are certain things you will need to know
to help you decide if distance learning is for
you. While online college courses are great
for most people, there are some who may need
to be better equipped in order to have greater
success.
You
need to be in touch with what type of student
you are. Working well independently is necessary
when you are pursuing an online education. Of
course you can get the help of your instructor,
any and all of your questions will be answered
as quickly as possible.
Do you have basic computer knowledge?
You will need basic knowledge of computers to
have a successful online education.
- You will need to know how to perform
basic tasks such as being able to cut
and paste, save files in various formats and
locations.
- Download and install software and
have a general idea of how to configure software
on your machine if necessary.
- Basic Internet skills such as how
to log in, use e-mail and e-mail attachments,
use your browser effectively, make bookmarks,
chat, and use search functions.
Reading
Material
The online teaching style is moderately different
than what you would receive in a traditional
classroom. Online learning will involve a lot
of reading materials. In a learner-focused environment
you will have to rely on the distribution of
information you receive during your course to
be your guide.
Communication
Communication is the key to success in an online
education. You will have to be clear about what
you do not understand and ask for help when
you need it. Your online instructor is there
to help you with anything you are having a problem
with. General questions about the course regarding
things like exams should also be directed to
your instructor.
Managing Your Time
Because you will be setting your own hours for
learning, you should try to arrange a schedule
that fits your lifestyle needs and stick to
it.
- Don't take a backseat. You are an
essential part of the online interaction that
is necessary in most courses. Sharing your
comments and participating will help you to
become a contributing member of the class.
- Always look over your work before
pressing the send button. Once your work has
been sent off it is gone!
Plagiarism and other violations are serious
in the online education community. Read
the student handbook to understand what are
considered violations in the online education
system.
