Online College Terminology

If you are new to the concept of online college education you are probably not very familiar with the terminology. Distance learning, online education courses, and online college are all terms that describe an education that can be achieved without leaving your home.

E-Learning is an umbrella term that describes learning done at a computer, usually connected to a network, providing the opportunity to learn almost anytime, anywhere. With its unique features, e-Learning is an experience that leads to comprehension and mastery of new skills and knowledge, just like its traditional counterpart. E-learning includes transmission of course material over the Internet, a computer network, via CD-ROM, interactive TV, or satellite broadcast.

Online college terminologyInstructor-led courses are similar to the traditional type where there is an instructor for the course. He or she develops the curriculum, conducts the class, provides the assignments, answers questions, leads discussions, and assigns grades.

Facilitator
an instructor who assists, directs, and stimulates the learning during an online course.

Instructor-facilitated courses allow you to learn at your own pace with the guidance of a course guide. Any videos and (or) textbooks that are part of the course are delivered to you. Online discussions also provide a medium whereby you and other students can exchange ideas. All assignments are returned to you with feedback by the course evaluator.

Synchronous learning
Learning where people are online at the same time and interaction occurs without a time delay (real-time) and which requires them to attend at specific times.

Self-paced courses
Often referred to as independent study allow you to work on your own in a non-classroom setting. These types of courses are not led by an instructor and do not have start and end dates.

Courseware is basically the software used to organize and manage the online educational process.

Certification is a valued credential awarded in several fields that proves competency upon satisfactory demonstration of particular knowledge and skills.
