Curriculums for Online College Degrees

Despite certain fundamentals that will be taught pretty much across the board, there will always be variations between different online college curriculums. Expect a certain number of introductory classes with a broad focus that will eventually lead you into your chosen field of online study. For example, if you chose e-business, you wouldn't immediately begin by studying database and network prgramming. Rather, you'd start out by learning the fundamentals.

E-business fundamentals

  • Business models
  • Financial systems
  • Fundamentals of business and trade

Usually, more specialized courses will only begin after you have obtained a foundation in the basics.

E-business advanced courses

  • Operating systems
  • Networks
  • Databases
  • Telecommunications

The same goes for the other fields of study as well. You won't jump right into advanced taxation if you're in accounting. Many of the concepts you learn in introductory classes will overlap with more focused studies so it is important to gain a solid grounding in your studies.

Reputable online college degree programs usually require that you complete about 6 of these introductory courses. Depending on your experience or education it is sometimes possible to get an exemption, but it is usually a good idea to complete the entire course curriculum.

The point here is that there is no easy route. A reputable online college degree will take more than a magical 2 weeks to complete. It's usually a matter of 2 to 3 years, but of course this varies by school, and also on how quickly you complete the work. For a certificate or diploma, expect approximately 1 year of study.

Below is a sample list of courses for a bachelor's online college degree program in business administration. We have included this as an example, because although e-business is one of the fastest growing areas of study, business administration is still one of the most common.

This is not from any particular school, but rather, is a sample of some of the more common courses given in business administration bachelor's degree programs.

  • Business Writing
  • Introductory Computing for Business
  • Business presentation techniques
  • Mathematics for Business
  • Fundamentals of Business Enterprises
  • Global Economics
  • Principles of Marketing
  • Global Business for the New Millenium
  • Ethics in Business
  • Fundamentals of Business Law
  • Advanced Marketing for the New Economy
